Nick, originally uploaded by manlyartjpc.

This was my dog Nick. I had to have him put to sleep a few years ago. It about killed me. I still miss him. He was quite possibly the most awesome dog ever. We think he was part lab, part whippet. A rugby buddy of mine found him on the side of the highway in Alabama as a puppy and gave him to me a couple of years later when he moved to England to play rugby there. Taking that dog was one of the best things I've ever done. I miss you buddy.

Space Ape

Space Ape, originally uploaded by manlyartjpc.

In the year 3045, a mad scientist discovers my perfectly frozen body in a glacier and decides to give Mother Nature a genetic slap in the face. He will unleash the Merciless Space Ape upon the Universe! Little does he know that the Space Ape really just wants to sit at home, read a good book, and get caught up on the last 1,000 years of movies. Maybe do some grilling. Have some friends over.

and we are back...

well, i hope that we all had a great summer! i know it wasn't long enough for me but, hey thats what happens when you grow up right?

so welcome back to the blog. we will be changing a few things up over the next few weeks. some great things to come.

as for the first topic of the new season: seeing as we are returning from a "short commercial break" and i have always loved cereal commercials lets see your box design, character design, or any other ad-type ideas for your favorite kids cereal. it can be one of your faves from back in the day, a new one that your kids love, or makeup your own cereal!

sorry for the delay on the post, but hey here it is!
let's draw!

Art for the week

Looks like the blog is going to take a hiatus for a few weeks, that way everyone who is a part of it can get caught up with their own work and we can come back at this like a bunch of art badass super pirates. But, since there was a topic for the week, I still drew something up for it. So here you go, my weird dark western image.

Momaw Nadon

Momaw Nadon

Okay, so he may not necessarily fall under the "classic" monster category. I'll try and do one that's more obviously a classic if I have time. I did this one completely by memory. For those of you who aren't complete Star wars nerds, he's from the cantina scene in Episode IV.

My monster...

I always dug Frankenstein, so I sorta drew him and tweaked him out a bit. And it looks like he is jumping into a fire of pop rocks and pixie dreams. Or some shit like that.

New Topic 7/3/07
They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're classic monsters. Nightmares from your childhood, horror flicks from yesteryear, those dark, dusky, spine-chilling memories lurking in the nether regions of your cerebral cortex. Monster Classics.

TIki Madness!

If any of you folks out there are in the Chicago area this weekend, I'll have a piece in DVA Gallery's third annual tiki show. The opening party is this Saturday, June 23rd from 4pm-11pm. It should be a good time. There have been rumors of Polynesian dancers, tiki beverages and Polynesian food. I'll be there for the party. Come check it out and say hi!

*UPDATE*- The opening went really well. It was a lot of fun. Also, I just got an e-mail letting me know that my painting sold! Woohoo!

Did you ever know..

My Hero, Jackson Publick: creator, writer, artist, and voice actor for the Venture Brothers. I think he's pretty super. Not only is he incredibly talented in a wide range of areas, but he also busts his ASS to make by far the best show on television. I kind of like him. Okay, I like him a lot.

Is everyone busy?

Seems like it. Even me damnit hehe. Here is my She-Ra... This one is set in the distant future of her world, you are looking at her great granddaughter, Megan Ra. The world is currently being ravaged by a techno virus orginated by the Computer AI known as S.K.E.L.E.T.O.R. The coming of the virus has brought the world into a realm of chaos.

Meg, grand daughter of She-Ra, has found her destiny while scavenging in her old ancestral home. Will it be enough to stop the evil S.K.E.L.E.T.O.R.???

Topic for week 6/12/2007

Well since we had such a great time with the awesome Wizard of Oz, I thought another reimaging week might be fun.

I had already decided something earlier, but since I know everyone is super busy this week, I decided to go with something that will be quicker to work on. So this week, I want everyone to redesign...

I know, why not He-Man? Well I saw some redesigns earlier, so I would rather have something fresh and new.

So enjoy...

Monsieur Increablé...

Mr. Incredible

Mr. Incredible. He's one of my favorite heroes. I appreciate a super hero that enjoys the occasional midnight snack after rescuing folks from a burning building. A hero with a gut is a hero I can identify with!

She's a Bat...She's a Hero!

She's two for the price of one. I think Jason picked this topic just so I'd finish her.

Wednesday, June 6, 2007

So here is my Hero's sketch

I decided to do a Little Ghosties parody of Heroes. If you don't watch it, well you don't get the joke... so eat it. Eat it hard and nasty. And you will get fat... if you eat it... eat it hard and nasty... hooray!

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

OK folks, the topic this week is heroes. It can be a real life hero, a super hero, a hero you made up. It can be a group of heroes. Heck, it can even be people from the TV show Heroes. Just give us heroic people. No drawing restrictions. Go nuts. Have fun.

Iron Man

By the strictest definition Iron Man is a cyborg. I can hardly wait to see Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark next summer!
If I had been thinking ahead I should have made a running, steampunk, Iron Man.

Why Men Run...

Why Men Run...

C'mon guys, admit it. The real reason we run is for the ladies. If left to our own devices, we'd be bonded at the molecular level with our couches.

Running and stuff

Here is my Running themed image. I just wanted to kinda pull the character out and stretch things and make him look like he is really hauling ass.

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

"Here's a man who would not take it anymore."

New Topic: Running

Simple, back-to-basics theme. I went out running yesterday and every time I do I'm reminded that it's something I should do more often. Interpret this one loosely or use it as an opportunity to put some motion into a character pose.

Sam & Fozzie...

Sam & Fozzie

I chose the famous Han & Chewie image in honor of Star Wars' 30th anniversary.

I had a few silly ideas for this theme but only barely enough time to whip together this one... Happy Memorial Day everyone.

Steampunk - The Amazing Everything Machine

Only a few weeks late, here's my Steampunk contribution. The Feeps, as it turns out, have a Steampunk origin story, and this very Feeplike machine is where it all begins.

The Amazing Everything Machine can cook, sweep, wash floors, make tea, incinerate garbage, answer the door, wake you up in the morning, and who knows what else. If you want to know more about how this relates to my little monsters, I've put up an info page here.

Kunoichi + RALPH

Did anyone ever play 'Rampage!'? It's like.. among my top favorite games. I always played Ralph, the giant werewolf. So I suppose this is my tribute to him, in a way.

A red Kunoichi.. aka, female NinJA. That's her name, too. Nin Ja. Roffle, roffle. Photoshopped the crap out of this because the original looked sosoSO terrible. But all is well now. Even with the questionable proportions. Critique that, if you want. I always need tips.

Kermit of the Wasters

New Topic: Muppets in Pop Culture.

It's a huge pleasure to be announcing my first ASS topic!

I want you to re-imagine popular movies, convert your favorite works of art, repopulate bands, or reinterpret the most memorable events in recent history...

...with Jim Henson's Muppets.

Use any Muppets you'd like in your parody- single panel, multi, poster, concept, whatever. Take it as far as you want in your renderings. Use any non-photograpic technique or medium you can get your hands on.

Have some fun.

Attack of the 50 ft Deadline

Just in case you were wondering why I haven't been posting lately.

Damned 15-minute drawings.

Thousands of people flooded the streets today as each of the major American cities was attacked by what witnesses described as "Atomic Giants." The 50-foot-tall, glowing terrors melted down entire buildings, fused cars to the streets, and evaporated local bodies of water, sources say. Luckily, not a single casualty was reported, as this is a parody of a 80's after school style cartoon, parodying a movie from the 50's. Plus, it's a drawing.

Gamera, friend to all children!

I'm pretty sure the first time I saw Gamera was on MST3K. It ruled. He flies around by spinning and flames shoot out of where his arms, legs and head tuck into his shell. Oh, Japan and thier wacky Kaiju!

He's sort of simple in this version, shambling out of the sea like a big doof...

Yeah... this is pretty dumb...

I am going to have to hink this for sure and color it up :).

Attack of the 50 Foot Pin-Up!

Attack of the 50 Foot Pin-Up!

She's monstrous. Monstrously hot! If my town was going to be destroyed by a 50 foot monster, I'd take her over Godzilla any day of the week.

New Topic: 50 Foot Monster in 15 Minutes

Draw your favorite 50 foot monster or make one up... but here's the catch:

- Time spent on your drawing should only be 15 MINUTES
- Pencil only, one color of lead
- No photoshop except to keep your drawing faithful to what you put on paper

I think we've all done some awesome work over the course of the blog. Every week we push ourselves to do a little better. Sometimes that takes us into some pretty ambitious territory. Now it's time to push in another direction to be loose and rock it with the old fashioned sketch.

As always, multiple posts are more than welcome.

So, get out yer stopwatches and your trusty 2B and get crackin'! Or should I say Kraken :B

Witch Slayer of Oz

Oz Sketch

OK, so I'm playing catch-up. I plan on doing a more finished version of this, but this is a sketch squad, so I thought I'd show the sketch. This is my take on the movie poster. In my movie, Dorothy stayed in Oz and developed a bit of a god complex. She feels it's her mission to rid Oz of witches, both good and evil. Her companions on this quest are the Tin Man (a haunted suit of armor), The Scarecrow (a mummy in search of the witch who has the canopic jar containing his brains) and the Lion (who shows the ultimate cowardice by becoming a traitor to his companions).

Orange Julius Ninja

Bright orange ninja! Dont' even try to sneak up on his left side just because he's wearing an's possessed by an oni and grants him vision in that eye. Try to ignore the fact that his hands are far too huge to hold his knife...oops. I wish I had given him a cooler hairdo, maybe the Japanese hero topknot with bangs. Well maybe not bangs....

He's done with gouache on orange mat board.

Party Ninja

Party Ninja, originally uploaded by manlyartjpc.

Beware the Party Ninja! One minute you're having drinks with him, the next, he's gone. But, in reality, he's probably just passed out behind the couch.
